Prosurgics' FreeHand making an impact internationally

15 Oct 2008

Leading surgical robotics company, Prosurgics, is ramping up the pace of its international introduction of FreeHand, the next generation robotic camera holder for laparoscopic surgery.

FreeHand was successfully introduced to the US market in September at the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons’ (SLS) Congress in Chicago, where it attracted great interest from surgeons performing gastrointestinal, urological and gynaecological procedures. Bill Perry, President of Prosurgics’ US operation proudly accepted the Society’s recognition of FreeHand as “Innovation of the Year, 2008”.

Following on from the success in Chicago, FreeHand made its first visit to a German surgical congress at the Kongress der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Urologie, held in Stuttgart. In common with their American colleagues, German urological surgeons found the product to be a new way of solving common problems like poor visualisation and variable levels of surgical procedure assistance.

“The FreeHand system from Prosurgics is unique due to its ability to manoeuvre smoothly and is fully controlled by a small device attached to the surgeon’s cap” commented Prof. Dr. Michael C. Truß, Head of Urology, Klinikum Dortmund GmbH, going on to say: “It only requires a very short learning curve, no programming and no intensive training for the surgeon, which is advantageous in comparison with speech controlled systems.”

The FreeHand robotic camera holder is the first in Prosurgics’ next generation of affordable robotics. Surgeons will always have a dependable assistant with FreeHand, enabling them to achieve a new level of efficiency and patient throughput. Suitable for all laparoscopic procedures, there is a growing expectation that FreeHand heralds a new standard in laparoscopic surgical practice. After trying FreeHand on the Prosurgics stand in Stuttgart, Dr. Kusche, Head of Urology and minimal invasive surgery at the Centre for Minimally Invasive Surgery, Recklinghausen, stated “My first impression is that it is fantastic and I`m looking forward to using FreeHand in my daily routine”

FreeHand will be demonstrated at the forthcoming congress of the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland in November; and at the World Congress of Endourology, to be held in December in Shanghai.
